Neuropsychological Testing
Neuropsychological testing in McKinney for children, teens, and adults with complex medical or neurological concerns. Clarify how brain changes affect attention, memory, mood, and daily life, with clear, integrated recommendations for next steps.
Who this helps
Neuropsychological testing is designed for people with neurological or medical conditions where everyday thinking, mood, or functioning have changed and the picture feels complex.
- Children and teens with concussion, seizure disorders, cancer treatment effects, or other neurological conditions who are struggling at school or home.
- Adults after stroke, concussion/TBI, COVID, or other medical events who notice new problems with memory, attention, or problem solving.
- People with long-standing attention, learning, or mood concerns where symptoms overlap and the diagnosis is unclear.
- Families and providers who need clear, integrated recommendations to guide treatment, school supports, or return-to-work planning.
When to consider neuropsychological testing
Consider a comprehensive neuropsychological evaluation if you or your child have:
- History of concussion, TBI, stroke, epilepsy, or other neurological conditions with new or worsening thinking or memory concerns.
- Persistent changes in attention, memory, processing speed, or problem solving after illness, surgery, cancer treatment, or other medical changes.
- Questions about readiness to return to school, work, driving, or independent living after a significant health event.
- Unclear diagnosis where neurological and psychological factors may both be contributing to symptoms.
What we assess
Neuropsychological testing links brain function with day-to-day thinking, mood, and independence. We tailor the battery to your history, concerns, and medical questions.
- Cognitive skills such as attention, memory, language, visuospatial skills, and processing speed.
- Executive functions including planning, organization, mental flexibility, problem solving, and self-monitoring.
- Mood, anxiety, behavior, and how emotional factors interact with brain-based changes in everyday life.
Testing session (~4 hours, in person): A comprehensive neuropsychological battery assessing attention, memory, language, visuospatial skills, processing speed, and executive functions, with mood and behavior measures as indicated. When helpful, we review records and gather input from family, school, or work to understand how these findings show up in everyday life.

Neuropsychological testing FAQs
What is a neuropsychological evaluation?
A neuropsychological evaluation is an in-depth assessment of how your brain is working in everyday life. It looks at attention, memory, language, problem solving, speed, and emotional functioning to understand your strengths, weaknesses, and what may be driving current concerns.
How is this different from an MRI or a standard psychological test?
Imaging studies like MRI or CT show brain structure. Neuropsychological testing shows how your brain is functioning in real time. It is more comprehensive than brief screening or rating scales and can clarify whether changes are most consistent with neurological conditions, mood/anxiety, or a combination of factors.
What should I expect on the testing day?
Most people are with us for about four hours, with built-in breaks. You will work one-on-one with a trained examiner on tasks like remembering information, solving problems, or answering questions. We encourage you to bring snacks, medications, glasses, and hearing aids so you are comfortable and able to do your best.
Who will see my results and how are they used?
Your results are summarized in a written report that includes diagnoses when appropriate and concrete recommendations. With your permission, we can share the report with your referring provider, neurologist, therapist, school, or employer to support treatment planning, school services, accommodations, or rehabilitation services.
Do I need a referral for neuropsychological testing?
Some insurance plans and medical systems require a referral, especially when neurological conditions are involved. If you are unsure, our staff can help you determine whether a referral is needed and how to coordinate this with your provider.
